Esram Metals

Metals (M) Sdn. Bhd. is a Malaysian-based metals trading and manufacturing company with a strong legacy in the recycling and secondary aluminium industry. Established in the mid-1990s by Dato’Rammu, the company has grown from a modest scrap metal trading operation into a recognized secondary aluminium ingot manufacturer, playing an important role in Malaysia’s circular economy.

Founded in Kulim, Kedah, Esram Metals was built on a clear entrepreneurial vision — to transform metal waste into valuable industrial resources while supporting the nation’s growing manufacturing sector. From the outset, Dato’Rammu identified the long-term potential of metal recycling, particularly as industrialization accelerated and sustainability became an increasingly critical concern.

Initially operating under the name Perniagaan Logam Chettiar, the business focused on the trading of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals, supplying recycled materials to local manufacturers. Through strong market insight, operational discipline, and trusted supplier relationships, the company experienced consistent growth throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.

In 2005, as part of its corporate formalization and in compliance with evolving government regulations, the business was officially incorporated and rebranded as Esram Metals (M) Sdn. Bhd. This transition marked a pivotal step in strengthening governance structures, operational transparency, and long-term sustainability planning.

ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL & GOVERNANCE (ESG) COMMITMENT

At the core of Esram Metals’ operations is a strong commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. The company recognizes that responsible metal recycling is not only a business opportunity, but also a critical environmental responsibility.

Environmental Stewardship

Esram Metals plays an active role in promoting environmental sustainability through:

  • Metal recycling and resource recovery, reducing landfill waste and conserving natural resources
  • Secondary aluminium production, which consumes significantly less energy compared to primary aluminium smelting
  • Waste minimization practices, ensuring scrap materials are efficiently processed and reused
  • Compliance with environmental regulations, including proper handling, storage, and processing of metal waste

By extending the lifecycle of metals, Esram Metals directly supports carbon footprint reduction, energy conservation, and the transition towards a low-waste, circular economy.

Social Responsibility

Esram Metals is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive working environment for its employees and stakeholders. Key social priorities include:

  • Occupational safety and health, with ongoing efforts to improve workplace safety standards
  • Employee development, skills training, and operational competency building
  • Ethical business practices, fostering trust with suppliers, customers, and regulatory bodies
  • Community contribution, supporting local economic development through job creation

The company believes that long-term success is inseparable from employee well-being and responsible stakeholder engagement.

Governance and Ethical Leadership

Strong governance has been a guiding principle since the company’s incorporation. Esram Metals emphasizes:

  • Transparent corporate governance structures
  • Regulatory compliance across environmental, industrial, and occupational frameworks
  • Responsible leadership and decision-making
  • Risk management and operational accountability

Under the leadership of Dato’ Rammu, the company continues to strengthen governance practices aligned with industry best standards.

STRATEGIC GROWTH AND INDUSTRIAL EXPANSION

Driven by a commitment to value creation and environmental responsibility, Esram Metals expanded beyond traditional trading activities. Recognizing the importance of moving up the value chain, the company invested heavily in infrastructure, technology, and human capital.

In 2011, Esram Metals established a 43,000-square-foot factory and warehouse facility, significantly enhancing its processing, storage, and logistics capabilities. This investment laid the foundation for the company’s entry into smelting and manufacturing operations, enabling greater control over quality, efficiency, and environmental performance.

The establishment of a smelting plant marked a major milestone in Esram Metals’ transformation into a secondary aluminium ingot manufacturing company. By converting recycled aluminium scrap into high-quality aluminium ingots, the company contributes to reducing dependence on primary aluminium production, which is energy-intensive and environmentally demanding.

Driven by increasing demand and a long-term expansion strategy, Esram Metals further strengthened its operational footprint when it established an additional manufacturing facility in Telok Gong, Selangor, Malaysia. This facility spans approximately 52,000 square feet and significantly expanded the company’s production capacity, logistics efficiency, and regional reach. The Telok Gong facility complements existing operations and reinforces Esram Metals’ ability to serve a broader customer base while maintaining consistent quality and environmental standards.

In line with its growth trajectory and increasing production capabilities, Esram Metals began expanding into international markets. The company commenced export operations to several countries, including India and Bangladesh, marking an important milestone in its evolution from a domestic player to a regional supplier of secondary aluminium products. This expansion reflects Esram Metals’ competitiveness, product reliability, and compliance with international trade and quality expectations.

Today, Esram Metals continues to strengthen its position as a responsible and forward-looking industry player, integrating sustainability, operational excellence, and regional market expansion as key pillars of its long-term strategy.
